Pet fish

Our youngest son, Seth, has been asking us for a while if he could get a pet fish. And for the longest time we have been putting it off and using reasoning like ‘you are too young, a pet fish is a huge responsibility, you will need to look after the fish yourself and you need to purchase the fish and food with your own money’

But none of that worked, he kept strong on the idea of having a pet fish.

Enter the confused dad – who had no idea that buying a pet fish is so complicated. We thought all we needed to do was go to the pet store, chose a fish, buy a bowl, some food and we are good to go.

When we got to the store that was far from the truth. First, the boys noticed some turtles for sale and the whole idea of owning a pet fish got forgotten when they decided they would buy four turtles and name them after the four teenage mutant ninja turtles – Leonardo, Rafael, Donatello and Michelangelo. So we sized a bowl, priced the food and stage (as they can’t remain in the water all the time) and we were about to make payment when the lady at the store informs us they won’t remain that small and will eventually grow bigger.

Cancelled that idea immediately. Can’t buy turtles and then have to free them.

Back on the fish. We see the fish we want – Comet gold fish, but we want to get two so they have a companion. We sized the bowl and some décor for it, only to be informed we need a pump for water filtering and an air pump (to help clean the tank and oxygenate the water).

We managed to get an all-inclusive tank that had everything in it, some décor, food and we bought two Comets – naming them Lucky and Bumblebee.

They have settle in well into our home and we thought they would just sit there but they are quite active little characters with personalities of their own.

Have you purchased a pet fish? How was your experience? Leave a comment below and let us know how it went for you guys.
