Mauritius

Mauritius was never in the plans. When we started discussions on getting out of South Africa we spoke about the UK, Canada and New Zealand.

But these countries came with a lot of requirements so they just became dreams, something we hoped would happen one day.

Living on an island, now that we manifested ourselves. I don’t feel lucky that we now find ourselves living on an island – one as beautiful as Mauritius.

Mauritius was made first and then heaven and heaven copied Mauritius

We feel immensely blessed but it wasn’t handed to us, we started talking about living on an island a few years before moving here, researching and planning how we could visit the island to see if it was what we needed.

That island, however, wasn’t Mauritius, is was in fact St Helena Island in the Atlantic Ocean.  I had friends living there and they raved about it so that’s where we decided we would take our little family.

But then some strange events happened. I found out I was being removed from my oil rig with no guarantee where I would be placed. So I made some updates to my online profile and applied for some jobs.

A job offer with family relocation to Mauritius came up, almost like a gift at the exact time that we needed a new job and a move away from South Africa because of crime, corruption, etc. and the need to re-focus what was important to us – Family/Time/Safety.

So Mauritius was never planned and we don’t consider ourselves lucky. We dreamt about the move, we spoke and planned for the move. And then when the opportunity came we took it with both hands.

We also consider that going into total lockdown after 3 months on the island as a blessing in disguise as it brought our little family even closer together as a unit and made the relocation process that much easier. We went from one extreme – where my family saw me for 6 months of the year, as I worked away as a expat, to the total opposite – being around each other 24/7 and we loved/ loving it.

Sure you have stories of your own, where you dream about something, then make plans around that dream which is goals set in motion only to have it come to life.

Leave a comment on how you have taken your dreams, turned them into achievable goals and managed to accomplish them.
