What is Empathy?

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another

Types of Empathy

  • Affective Empathy – the ability to respond to other people’s emotions appropriately
  • Somatic Empathy – the ability to feel what another person is feeling
  • Cognitive Empathy – the ability to understand someone’s response to a situation

So why teach empathy to your kids?

Helping kids to develop a strong sense of empathy is beneficial:

  1. It helps them to build a sense of security and stronger relationships with other – kids, teachers and coaches; positioning them well for learning, mentoring and coaching,
  2. It promotes good mental health,
  3. It encourages tolerance and acceptance of others.

I’m sure there’s more reasons but as promised I’m keeping this short and sweet.
