The Sand Story

I came across the sand story at a wedding and it stuck with me ever since I heard/saw it.  Guess it was the way it was executed but it made a profound difference in my life that day.

The Pastor asked the Mothers of both the groom and bride to join the couple at the altar. He then handed them a bag of sand and instructed them to face us, the congregation.

The sand in the bag represents all the feelings from family and friends here today: love, care, compassion, hate, jealousy, disappointment, etc. This bag has been filling since the day you were born by the people you have in it, past and present

He then instructed the Mothers to take their bags filled with sand and fill the glass jar he had the groom and bride hold together.

The sand in the glass jar is what you both bring to this relationship, now empty the jar

They poured out the sand together and the wind carried it away.

He then said:

This empty jar now represents your marriage and the new life you are starting together, fill it with your own sand: love, disagreement, care, kindness, compassion, empathy, disappointment, etc. and don’t allow others to influence the filling of your jar

Take a moment to let that sink in.  People are so quick to call it quits these days instead of working it out and seeing it through. Most times the problem comes from outside sources.

Protect you jar and you will have a Happy Fulfilling Marriage
